SWEET AND SOUR CANNED TUNA

If you are one of those who got a lot of canned goods last Christmas, then we are having the same dilemma. It’s already April but the canned goods we got from the pamasko are still many! One good thing about canned goods is that they have a long shelf life so we can still use them safely even after 4 months.

Most of the canned goods we got are luncheon meat, corned beef and canned tuna. I usually use the luncheon meat and corned beef as a part of the meat sauce in a spaghetti (it was really yumyum!) so they are the first to ran out. For the tuna, we usually make them into either sauteed with rice, or tuna spread. We even tried making the famous sushi bake! But we still have a few canned tuna stocks left.

Canned tuna is really one of the best canned goods. But if you eat tuna almost everyday, then you need to step up your game to make every dish uniquely appetizing.

Since we had some tuna for quite a while now, I can really taste its salty ocean flavor. Although good, I want to add some acidity to it to remove the “umay”. For acidity, we use sour ingredients to compliment the salty flavor. The first ingredient that I though of was pineapples. And yep! I decided to transform the simple canned tuna to a sweet and sour dish!

Thanks to ready to use pineapples and the sweet and sour sauce is now very easy to make. Aside from canned tuna, you can also try this recipe to other canned dishes to compliment the saltiness and make it a more lively dish!

HOW TO MAKE SWEET AND SOUR CANNED TUNA

Canned tuna

What’s best about using canned goods as the main meat is that there will be a very little preparation needed. Saute the aromatics and the other veggies (pre-fry the potatoes since they cook slow). The sauce base will be made using the drained oil from the tuna and the sour tomato sauce. Let the sauce simmer before adding the tuna flakes and the potatoes. Lastly, add the pineapple tidbits. You can crush them gently to have their flavors more in the sauce. Lastly, season with salt and pepper and add some chili flakes if you like it a bit spicy.

I love sweet and sour canned tuna either as an ulam for rice, a dip or spread for bread, or the meat base for tuna spaghetti. Enjoy this dish however you like. Yum!
