Sweet Potato Donuts

Sweet potato donuts are made by frying sweet dough donut, made with sweet potatoes, all purpose flour, sugar, powdered milk, eggs, bread crumbs. Sweet Potato Donut Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kilo sweet potatoes
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 2 eggs (for coating)
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs (for coating)
  • oil (for deep frying)

Directions:

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into large chunks. Wash and rinse and then transfer to a large pot. Pour enough water to cover the sweet potatoes. Cover the pot and then bring it to a boil.
  2. After a few minutes of boiling, do the fork test to check if the sweet potatoes are soft. Then, drain the liquid and transfer the sweet potatoes to a separate plate. Mash the sweet potatoes using a fork.
  3. Transfer the mashed sweet potatoes to a bowl. Add the flour, powdered milk and sugar. Mix until well combined. Knead using your hands until you form a sticky dough.
  4. Grab a scoop of the dough and then roll into a ball. Make it a little flat and then poke a hole in the middle to resemble a doughnut. Do this with the rest of the dough.
  5. On a separate plate, crack the eggs and whisk them well. On another plate, add the breadcrumbs.
  6. Dip each donut in the egg and then in the breadcrumbs. Do this to all the donuts.
  7. Heat a lot of oil using low heat. Deep fry the sweet potato donuts for a few minutes. Flip to cook evenly. Once golden brown in color, transfer the donuts to a strainer or paper towel to drain excess oil.
  8. Transfer the sweet potato donuts to a serving plate. You can enjoy them as it is or have some chocolate, strawberry or caramel dipping sauce. You can also add sprinkles and toppings! Yum!

Once I learned how to make a veggie garden, I have been trying to plant a lot of veggies since then. I started with the basic ones like tomatoes and sitaw where you can see the fruit growing. Now, I have dedicated a part of my garden to rootcrops. I was initially worried if I am planting and taking care of them right because I cannot see the rootcrop from under the soil.

How to Make Sweet Potato Donuts

Making some sweet potato donuts at home is much easier than waiting for a lot of hours in line just to get a donut which you can make at home. If you have tried making fried donuts before, then the following steps would be familiar to you.

Lets start with preparing sweet potatoes. If you have a garden, sweet potatoes can be harvested after 3-4 months of planting. That may seem a long time but if you love gardening, that would feel super rewarding. The easiest way to have sweet potatoes is by buying them from the market or grocery. There are many types of potatoes so make sure to grab the right one. Sweet potatoes have yellow-orange skin and flesh.

Our first step would be creating mashed sweet potatoes. This step is just like creating mashed potatoes. Once you have your sweet potatoes, remove the skin. We have to boil them to cook and soften them initially. This step can be done faster if the sweet potatoes are sliced into chunks. You can mash them nicely using a fork, a whisk or a potato masher. Our goal is to mash them finely without chunks.

To turn the mashed sweet potatoes into a dough, lets add some all purpose flour, and some sugar to make it sweet. No need for baking powder. It will be really dry and clumpy at first, so you will need to knead the mixture using your hands to turn it into a dough. Our target consistency is similar to a clay.

Turn the dough into small balls, depending on the size of donut you want. (1 scoop is ideal, because the bigger the donut, the longer it is to cook). To make it look like the classic donut, poke a hole in the middle.

Some sweet potato donut recipes deep fry the donuts at this point. But in this recipe, we do just a few extra steps  of dipping it in beaten eggs and then in breadcrumbs to achieve that crispy crust and softer core.

The last step would be deep frying the donuts until golden brown. While the donuts we make are already sweet since we added sugar into the main mixture, we could still decorate our donuts with our favorite toppings like dipping them in chocolate, strawberry or caramel syrup. You can also top them with sprinkles, mango slices, crushed cookies and whatever comes into your mind. Yum!

Kamote Donut Recipe in Tagalog

Mga Sangkap:

  • 1/2 kilo ng kamote
  • 1 tasang harina
  • 1/2 tasang asukal
  • 1/2 tasang powdered milk
  • 2 itlog (pang coating)
  • 1 tasa ng breadcrumbs (pang coating)
  • mantika (pangprito)

Paano Lutuin:

1. Tanggalan ng balat ang mga kamote at hiwain ito nang malalaking chunks. Hugasan at ilipat sa malaking pot. Lagyan ito ng maraming tubig. Takpan ang kaldero at hayaan itong kumulo.

2. Pagkatapos ng ilang minuto, gawing ang fork test para malaman kung malambot na ang mga kamote.  Ilipat ang mga kamote sa lalagyan at durugin ang gamit ang tinidor.

3.  Ilagay ang harina, powdered milk, at asukal. Haluin hanggang nang mabuti. Haluin ito gamit ang mga kamay hanggang makabuo ng malagkit na dough.

4. Kumuha ng isang scoop dough at gawing balls. medyo i-flat ng konti ang mga ito at lagyan ng butas sa gitna para mag mukhang donut.

5. Sa isang hiwalay na plato, basagin at haluin ang mga itlog. Sa isa pang plato, ilagay naman ang breadcrumbs.

6. I-dip ang mga donut sa itlog saka pagulungin sa breadcrumbs. Gawin ito sa lahat ng donut.

7. Magpainit ng maraming mantika gamit ang mahinang apoy. Iprito ang mga donut ng ilang minuto. Baliktarin ang mga ito para maging pantay ang luto.  Kapag naging kulay golden brown na ang mga ito, ilipat ang mga donut sa  strainer o paper towel para tumulo ang sobrang mantika.

8. Ilipat ang mga sweet potato donut sa serving plate. Pwede mo itong buhusan ng chocolate, strawberry, o caramel dip o syrup. Pwede mo rin itong lagyan ng mga sprinkles at toppings! Yum!
