Stir-fry Squid
The main meat which will be used for this recipe is the squid. Let’s have a quick fun facts about the squid to make us appreciate them more.
There are many seafoods out there and the squid an underrated one. When we say seafoods, we always thought of shrimps, crabs and clams. We usually forget about the squids, which are very yummy and chewy when cooked. And most especially, squids are very easy to cook.
Squid is a type of seafood which were believed to have existed from more than a million years back. Some sea monsters and sea legends were attributed to the form of the squid. Squids are most famous due to their defense mechanism, which is spraying a black ink upon its enemy to have a time to escape away.
It’s also my nephew’s first time seeing a large squid so I showed him its parts. sThe whole large portion of the squid is its body. The triangle part at the end are its fins. If you look at the head closely, you can see its two eyes. We usually pop them before cooking. The black color on the body is actually a black skin, and it can be removed. When you chop the head off, you can see the innards are all black due to the squid ink. The ink is edible but a dish will be more appetizing if the squids are well cleaned.

How to Cook Stir-fry Squid
Making some stir fried squid is super easy. But before the actual cooking, let us first prepare the squid to make this dish extra special and more appetizing.
For this recipe, I recommend the largest squids you can get. You can use the frozen ones but the fresh ones from the wet market are better. Prepare the squid and clean it well. Pulling the black skin might take some practice. Instead of simply slicing the squid into small pieces, let us design them by making criss cross cuts. Make sure not to push the knife too hard. This design will also let the seasonings and the sauce stick to the squids very well.
The sauce is made by simply combining the classic seasonings including oy sauce, sugar, apple cider vinegar and cornstarch. You can also use the regular vinegar if apple cider vinegar is not available.
Before we stir fry the squids, let’s blanch it first. By blanching, we rapidly cook the squid in boiling water in not more than 1 minute. It is like pre-cooking the squid before stir frying.
The last part of this recipe is stir frying the aromatics, bell peppers and the squid, then adding the sauce. You can add other veggies you like. This step would only take 1 minute since the squids are already blanched. Be sure not to cook them for too long to prevent the squid from being too chewy.
I love having this stir fry squid as an appetizer, side dish, or as my ulam. Yum!
