WHAT IS A CORNED BEEF?

Corned beef is one among the famous types of canned foods. While there is no corn involved in the making of this food product, the reason why this food got its name lies in the “corning” process, which is a type of meat curing and preservation where the beef, in this case, is rubbed salt which are in the size of corn kernels.

After this, the cured beef now undergoes the process of canning, before we are able to buy them from the groceries and supermarkets.

SINABAWANG CORNED BEEF

While we always want our food to be fancy and bonggacious, we cannot afford to do this every with this economy. We need to accept that we sometimes have petsa de peligro days, but still we need to make most of our budget.

Ever since college, I have been exposed to a lot of situations where my tipid hacks are really challenged. During these days, the sinabawang corned beef was our savior when me and my dormmates were all tight with our budget. We always cook our food to save extra money instead of ordering outside. We were 4 in our room but unfortunately, the only thing we can buy was two cans of corned beef. We got lucky we still have a large tomato left in our fridge that time!

When you look at it closely, the sinabawang corned beef is not a bad thing. First, the dish is extended, making an ulam for 4 people at once. Second, adding some water to serve as the sauce distributes the saltiness of the beef due to processing. And third, as corned beef are naturally prepared to be salty for a longer shelf life, the flavor of the beef does not disappear, hence, becomes much more enjoyable and fun to eat with less guilt!

Even as an adult, I consider this college life hack still useful when preparing dishes for my family. But now, I make sure to add some veggies to it to make it extra healthier. The sinabawang corned beef pairs well with a giant bowl of hot steaming rice, eaten during lunch or dinner. Yum!

HOW TO MAKE SINABAWANG CORNED BEEF

sinabawang corned beef

Making sinabawang corned beef follows the same steps on how you prepare your usual ginisang corned beef, but of course, we make it saucy.

Preparing this dish is super simple, and the hardest part might be choosing your brand of corned beef. There are a lot of brands and a lot of flavors you can choose from, so the only factor left is the one that would fit your budget. The brands with the lowest prices are often with extenders and are already saucy while the one which are a little expensive are those you can see the real chunks and strips of beef. If you think you can buy 2 cans of this little expensive ones, then go for it. Worry not because we are going to make these 2 cans fit the whole family!

The first part of preparing this dish is by frying the potatoes until brown and tender. These potatoes are not just for additional flavor and color, but also to extend the dish and reduce the natural saltiness of the corned beef due to processing. While we want to extend the dish using potatoes, make sure that these potatoes still do not overpower the corned beef.

The next step is to saute the corned beef in the aromatics. I usually wait until the corned beef is a little toasted before I proceed with the next step. How done the corned beef is depends to your liking. Then, add a cup of water. This will be our sauce. If you will be using more or less cans of corned beef, just take note that our ratio is 2 cans to 1 cup of water. This will be the sauce of our corned beef as it reduces.

Season the sauce however you like but please be gentle with the salt as the corned beef is already salty. To make it healthier and more, you can add some shredded cabbage to this if you like. If you want a spicy version of this recipe, simply add some red chilies or red pepper flakes.

Add the potatoes in the broth and some onion rings on the top to complete our setup. The dish is now ready to be devoured! I really love this with a big bowl of hot steaming rice. Yum!
