CRABS AND SHRIMPS

When we look at the seafood kingdom, crabs and shrimps are always on the top list. Most of them are more famous than some fishes!

Crabs are shelled crustaceans with an oval shaped body and has clippers. In Tagalog, they are known as alimango or alimasag. But did you know that there’s a difference between the two? Some say that one is a female and the other is a male. Sorry, but you got it wrong. If you’re quite good at distinguishing things, you’ll notice that the alimasag has thin legs while the alimango has large legs. The alimasag is smaller in size than the alimango.

The shrimp is one among the most expensive seafoods in town. A kilo of it has an average price of 800 and it can go up to 1000 pesos per kilo! You might have heard of prawns, didn’t you? Shrimps and prawns are actually different from one another. It is truly difficult to identify shrimps from praws but the most important thing is that, you can still use them interchangeably in the kitchen.

Shrimps and crabs are both shelled animals which are originally gray and becomes orange when cooked. It’s really funny how we draw these creatures on our drawing book as kids and we color them orange! It’s like, we put some cooked crabs and shrimp in the see HAHA!

Eating together with a lot of your friends and family is one of the happiest feelings in the world. Eating becomes more fun and challenging when everyone is nag uunahan! We always have some boodle fight during our beach outings.. and anytime if we have the time and food! Boodle fight has been quite a practice here at our probinsya also for the reason that we don’t wanna wash plates (Just kidding!).

Garlic butter crabs and shrimp is one of the most requested ulams during this type of gatherings. People love to eat every meat and every juice possible from the crabs and shrimp!

Aside from gatherings, I also prepare some garlic butter crabs and shrimp during simple lunches and dinners, but I use the smaller version of crabs, the crablets. Same kind of fun but in mini version. The sauce is best paired with the rice, while you slurp on the juices from the crablets and shrimps.

HOW TO COOK GARLIC BUTTER CRAB AND SHRIMP

Making this garlic butter crab and shrimp is easier than you imagine. If you have made any recipes using crab and shrimps in the past, then this will be simple for you.

The best and the freshest crabs can be seen from the seaside market. If you had a beach outing, try to stroll around the area and look for seafood vendors. They usually sell live crabs and newly caught shrimps. This is what happened to me so I have brought live crabs at home.

One great perk of buying live crabs is that they are very very fresh. But one great challenge with this is that THEY FIGHT FOR THEIR LIVES. I untied them in the sink and now I cannot go near the sink. 🙁 They own my house now. (Just kidding!)

After an hour-long battle with the crabs, I won. I dedicate this recipe blog to all people who helped me with the fight. (HAHA). Preparing the crab is super easy. For this recipe, I decided not to open the crab’s body unlike the others. But if you prefer to open it and/or to remove the clips, for example, feel free to do so.  For the crabs, simply devein them. We want their shells intact so that it can absorb some of the sauce for later.

We will be using a lot of butter for this recipe as butter will be our sauce base. Add some oil just to prevent the butter from burning. After sauteing the aromatics, add the lemon soda for some fresh sweetness taste. Although very clammed and shells, these seafoods are actually very quick to cook. Once orange in color, they are starting to cook. Just prevent cooking them for too long to prevent the shrimps from being chewy.

Adding Shrimps to Garlic butter crabs and shrimp

To continue with the sauce, add the rest of the ingredients to fully season them. Just be cautious not to overpower the garlic and buttery taste. For this recipe, I added some chili flakes for some kick. When the sauce is fully covering the shrimp and crabs, then it’s ready!

I know we had just a beach outing but the fun never stops at the beach. The best way to serve this type of dish is through a boodle fight. Grab your banana leaves, serve your rice, cut the aromatics and let’s continue the fun!

This dish can also be served during usual dinners and lunches. Yum!
