Alaska Milk

Alaska Milk or the Alaska Milk Corporation (AMC) is a Filipino brand, from Holland Milk Products Inc. a subsidiary of FrieslandCampina Dutch brand, and has no affiliation to the US state of Alaska. They have been manufacturing milk products for Filipino homes since 1972. An iconic brand of milk in the Philippines recognized from the ‘Alaska boy’ image on the front of the can. This grocery staple is used by many households for its dairy products like milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk, powdered milk and many more.

A short Introduction

This milk brand origin country is from the Philippines. A brand was established in 1972, by the Holland Milk Products, Inc. or “HOMPI” joined by the General Milling Corporation or “GMC” with Friesland Campina. The brand was supposed to only manufacture condensed milk and evaporated milk canned goods, but then expanded to UHT milk (ultra pasteurization or ultra high temperature processing) and powdered milk. They built up the Alaska brand for years and even got it listed in the Philippines Stock Exchange named ‘AMC’ in 1995. In 2007, AMC acquired Nestlé Philippines, part of the milk business that included the product brands of Milkmaid, Nestlé Carnation, Krem Top, Liberty, and Alpine. AMC was then slowly bought by FrieslandCampina in 2012 owning 98.1% and delisting it from the stock market, with Wilfred Steven Uytengsu Jr remaining as the chairman of the company.

Though a well known brand there are many questions about it. One of the big questions is ‘Who is the kid in the Alaska milk logo ?’ Something many wonder? The Alaska boy was not inspired by a real Alaskan kid or the late AMC Chairman’s (Wilfred Uytengsu) son Michael Uytengsu even if the character and the son might look alike. Many believed it was him after watching the first Alaska TV commercial in 1974, where the young Micheal Uytengsu played against Cisco Oliver, a professional American basketball player. The short commercial program popularized lines like “Yeah men!” tagline, which the brand still uses in many Alaska brand of milk commercials and posters. With another tagline “Wala pa rin tatalo sa Alaska” which translates to “There is still no beating the Alaska milk drink” still being used till today. The face we all know was just a fictional rendition drawn by Alfredo Alcala a legendary Pinoy comic artist from the 70’s to 80’s that had worked under Marvel and DC on works like Conan, Detective comics and more.

You can find any of the Alaska products like the milk powder, ready to drink tetra packs, canned evaporated or condensed milk in every grocery store, sari-sari store, and convenience store. A sure best seller during the holidays and summer seen added into many fan-favorite dishes like fruit salads, leche flan, buko pandan, halo-halo, sopas, and other cream based recipes.
