1 Kilo Fresh mussels (Tahong) cleaned 3 Tbsp Butter or Margarine 1 Piece Onion medium, chopped 3 Cloves Garlic minced 1 Ginger thumb-size, sliced 1 Tbsp Fish sauce (patis) Ground black pepper to taste 2 Cups Sprite or any lemon-lime soda
Clean the mussels thoroughly by scrubbing the shells and removing the beards. Discard any cracked or dead mussels.
Heat a large pan over medium heat and melt the butter.
Sauté the sliced ginger until lightly browned.
Add the garlic and onions and cook until fragrant.
Add the cleaned mussels and stir for about 1 minute.
Cover the pan and let the mussels steam for 3 minutes.
Pour in the Sprite and add the fish sauce.
Season with ground black pepper to taste.
Stir gently, cover again, and simmer for 8–10 minutes or until the mussels have opened.
Transfer to a serving bowl together with the broth and serve hot with steamed rice.
Use only fresh mussels with tightly closed shells.
Discard any mussels that remain closed after cooking.
Avoid overcooking, as mussels can become rubbery.
Fresh ginger helps remove any fishy smell while enhancing the broth.
Adjust the amount of fish sauce according to your taste since mussels naturally contain some saltiness.
For a spicy version, add chopped bird's eye chilies while sautéing the aromatics.
