This rich and glossy Homemade Chocolate Sauce is easy to make with cocoa powder, milk, sugar, butter, and vanilla. Perfect for pancakes, waffles, churros, ice cream, bread, fruit, and other favorite snacks and desserts.
Sift the cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt into a saucepan to remove lumps.
Add the milk and stir until all the dry ingredients are completely dissolved.
Cook over low heat, stirring continuously to prevent the sauce from burning or sticking to the bottom.
Continue cooking for about 4 minutes, or until the mixture begins to bubble and thickens.
Turn off the heat once the sauce reaches a smooth, pourable consistency.
Add the butter and vanilla extract. Stir until the butter melts completely and the sauce becomes smooth and glossy.
Allow the chocolate sauce to cool. It will thicken slightly as it cools.
Serve as a topping or dipping sauce for pancakes, waffles, churros, ice cream, bread, fruit, and other desserts.
Store any leftover sauce in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.
Notes
For the best flavor, use Dutch-processed or alkalized cocoa powder. Fresh milk, whole milk, or evaporated milk can be used. Vanilla extract is optional but adds a lovely depth of flavor. For an even richer chocolate taste, add about ½ teaspoon of instant coffee powder.Keep the heat low and stir continuously while cooking because the sauce can burn easily. The sauce will become thicker as it cools. If it becomes too thick after refrigeration, gently warm the amount you need and stir until smooth.
