Easy Homemade Cheese Sauce for Nachos, Fries and More
YUMMY KITCHEN
A creamy, rich, and flavorful homemade cheese sauce made with cheddar, mozzarella, milk, butter and cheese powder. This quick and easy sauce is perfect for nachos, French fries, burgers, pasta and other favorite snacks.
Melt the butter: Place a saucepan over low heat. Add the butter and allow it to melt completely without letting it brown or burn.
Cook the flour: Add the all-purpose flour and stir continuously until it is completely incorporated with the butter. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Add the milk: Gradually pour in the milk while stirring continuously. Keep stirring until the flour mixture dissolves and the sauce becomes smooth.
Add the cheddar: Add the grated cheddar cheese and stir gently until it begins to melt. Cook for about 1 to 2 minutes.
Add the mozzarella: Stir in the grated mozzarella cheese. Continue stirring over low heat until the cheese melts completely and the sauce becomes creamy.
Add the cheese powder: Add the cheese powder gradually, stirring thoroughly after each addition until completely incorporated.
Season: Taste the sauce before adding salt, as the cheese and cheese powder may already be salty. Add salt and pepper according to your preference.
Finish: Remove the saucepan from the heat once the sauce is smooth and creamy. Let it cool slightly before serving.
Serve: Pour the warm cheese sauce over nachos, use it as a dip for French fries, or drizzle it over burgers, pasta, and other snacks.
Notes
Grate the cheese yourself when possible. Freshly grated cheese generally melts more smoothly than some pre-shredded varieties.
Cook the flour in butter for about a minute to prevent a raw, floury taste.
Add the milk gradually while stirring to help prevent lumps.
Keep the heat low when adding cheese. Excessive heat can cause the sauce to become grainy or separate.
If the sauce becomes too thick, gradually add a little evaporated milk or regular milk while stirring.
Taste before adding salt because cheddar and cheese powder can already contain plenty of salt.
The sauce thickens as it cools, so serve it warm for the best drizzling and dipping consistency.
For leftovers, store the cooled sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat gently on the stovetop while stirring and add a splash of milk if needed.
