The broth is flavored with the tamarind fruit or nowadays a pack of sinigang mix to give it it’s iconic sour flavor, this is then mixed in with vegetables like tomatoes, spinach, onions, white radish, eggplant, garlic, and green sili or green long peppers for an extra kick. Some sinigang recipes also include fillers like taro root and other leafy vegetables not only for the color, it also is great for sipping up the soup base which makes each bite as flavorful. Tamarind fruit, tamarind paste, or the sinigang mix which is the main ingredient that makes the sinigang. Some households also use green mangoes and kamias to make it lip smacking sour or just as a replacement for the Tamarind. The Tamarind is a tropical fruit found in Africa and Asia, in the Philippines some household even have them in their backyard or garden ready to be picked from the tree or those fallen on the ground to be cleaned and added into the soup or sometimes shared by neighbors since it can also be eaten as a sweet and is popularly made into a tamarind flavored candy, or dried and coated with sugar in the Philippines.
