What is a Philly Cheesesteak?
The original cheesesteak was made in the 20thcentury sold by a hot dog cart vendor. With not so much evidence on who started birth of the cheesesteak idea, its been credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri as the original creators. One day, Pat Olivieri was sick of eating hot dogs for his lunch, he went to the butchers shop and bought some beef, cooked it in the grill and made frizzled beef, with onions, some cheese, placed in a loaf of bread or a hot dog bun. It was published in the Library Company of Philadelphia, as one of the snack made in a 1987 exhibition. A random cab driver who roamed around the area caught a whiff of the savory delicacy and asked for a piece for himself. And just like that, the cheesesteak started its legacy. Since then it has moved on and transformed to a sandwich made with sliced beefsteak, melted cheese placed on a long hoagie roll. The Cheesesteak sandwich has then been a popular regional fast food rooted in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
The popularity of the cheesesteaks rose with many family run businesses and independently own shops, and some fast food chains also recreating the dish in their own manner. Some can even find a version of this at high end restaurants, soon after it’s reached all the world as came to be called ‘Philly cheesesteak’ to remind many where it came from.
What makes up the Philly Cheesecake?
This common but beloved street food favorite isn’t just for a snack, our outdoor dinning, you can also make this at home, with just a few ingredients you can easily find in the grocery, or with a selection of ingredients needed with your own preferences. To start with, prepare the cheese sauce, we want to make it early so it can cool own and thicken before we use it to top off the cheesesteak later. All you need to do is heat up the butter and mix it well with all purpose flour, this will act as a thickener that’ll help bind all the cheeses and liquids together. Once it turns into a paste, slowly add the evaporated milk to give it that creamy and sweet taste, adding this while stirring continuously to make sure there won’t be any flour lumps. Add in some filled cheese, filled cheese is a type of cheese that’s considered a processed cheese made from real cheese like cheddar and other ingredients to help it last longer, often called an inferior cheese as its cheap and made with skim milk with a fatty filling like lard to replace the fat that was removed in the cream. Add in some white cheddar cheese for a little sharpness, and some cheese powder for color and a little saltiness. These are mixed well till you get a nicely yellow colored sauce with a smooth texture. Transfer this to a container to cool down and get thicker. For the beef and other ingredients, sauté some onions and belle pepper for some color, these also help contrast the savory flavor of the beef and the creamy and slightly salty taste of the melted cheese mixture. Sautéing them till soft, taking it off the pan to cook the beef that’s been seasoned with salt and pepper, cooking till they’ve changed in color, adding the veggies back and mixing them together. These are then assembled by filling hotdog buns with the simple but nicely cooked beef slices, topped with a drizzle or more of cheese.
