Though Hawaiian are well known for their pineapples, these are not native to Hawaii, this prickly sweet summery fruit can be traced back to South America where it pineapple production was built in the 1900’s. The First pineapple to be discovered was found in Brazil and Paraguay in 200 – 300 AD. First documented by King Kamehameha they called these ‘hala kahiki’ with ‘kahiki’ meaning ‘foreign’ and ‘hala’ similar to a fruit they called. In Hawaii’s Lanai island around 97% of the land is used for the Hawaiian pineapple plantation which was put to rest in the 1992. Though pineapple production is a bit scarce compared to the olden days. Recent advancements help produce sweeter pineapples that helps with making the fruit easier to transport and make sure the only fresh pineapples are exported.

Pineapple were used in long boat trips, eating pineapple helped prevent poor wound healing and was useful for getting vitamin C, this was also used as a cleaning agent for boats. While the pineapple is actually a fruit consisting of berries grown and fused together also known as a ‘multiple fruit’ or ‘collective fruit’ it got the name pine-apple from it’s scientific name “nanas’ which meant pine and ‘comosus’ which meant ‘tufted’ these language were used by the indigenous people of Barzil, the Tupi people. Pineapples take 2 years to grow and are grown through vegetative reproduction or ‘cloning’ which uses the crown, leafy branches, suckers, and shoots of the pineapple. In the Azores Island they fond that pineapple can even grow flowers by smoking these, this method also helps fruits to be produced throught the year.
