One of the earliest version of instant coffee was invented around 1771, Britain, developed in America in 1853, field-tested during the Civil War. Established in the 1908’s, instant coffee was massed produced to accompany soldiers in the Civil war to give them a caffeine boost. But instant coffee was not the same style of granulated powder we know today, instant coffee made for war had grease like consistency and didn’t live up to the soldier’s palette. It was in 1901, Satori Kato a Japanese American chemist created a successful way to create a soluble coffee. After a few more alterations by different brands, this then became a household item in the 1938 by Nestle, now branded with Nescafe. With more that 5,500 cups of instant coffee consumed per second around the globe. Nestlé started it’s global coffee domination following the Wall Street Crash, with the collapse of the market, unsold coffee were left at their Brazil warehouses. Which they then tried selling these stocks to consumers, by recreating and preserving the aroma and taste, researching and creating a new way to preserve the coffee and produce coffee powders packaged in tin cans to be launched in Switzerland, setting up a large scale production, moving onto the United Kingdom and a few month later in the United States. In 1940, Nescafe had become available in 30 countries worldwide.
The convenience of enjoying the beverage with just hot cup of water without the need for a machine, grinder or brewer, became a worldwide phenomenon that’s enjoyed till this day.
